Art under Attack: Histories of British Iconoclasm at Tate Britain
Art under Attack: Histories of British Iconoclasm is the first exhibition exploring the history of physical attacks on art in Britain from the 16th century to the present day. Iconoclasm describes the deliberate destruction of icons, symbols or monuments for religious, political or aesthetic motives. The exhibition examines the movements and causes which have led to assaults on art through objects, paintings, sculpture and archival material.
Highlights include Thomas Johnson's Interior of Canterbury Cathedral 1657- the only painting documenting Puritan iconoclasm in England - exhibited for the first time alongside stained glass removed from the windows of the cathedral. Allen Jones's Chair 1969 is on display, as well as evidence of statues destroyed in Ireland during the 20th century. The show considers artists such as Gustav Metzger, Yoko Ono and Jake and Dinos Chapman, who have used destruction as a creative force

Beyond El Dorado: power and gold in ancient Colombia at the British Museum
17 October 2013 - 23 March 2014
For centuries, Europeans were dazzled by the legend of a lost city of gold in South America. The truth behind this myth is perhaps even more fascinating. El Dorado - literally 'the golden one' - refers to an intriguing ritual that took place at Lake Guatavita, near modern Bogotá.
Organised with Museo del Oro, this major new exhibition at the British Museum explores the rich and diverse cultures of Colombia before the arrival of the Spanish in the 16th century. With a focus on the craftsmanship and extraordinary metalworking skill of the peoples of ancient Colombia, it presents a hidden world of distinct and vibrant cultures.
The exhibition features more than 300 beautiful and detailed works made from gold and other precious materials, some of which are being displayed in the UK for the first time.

The Cheapside Hoard: London's Lost Jewels at the Museum of London
11 October 2013 - 27 April 2014
Discover the secrets of the Cheapside Hoard in a major new exhibition at the Museum of London. This extraordinary and priceless treasure of late 16th and early 17th century jewels and gemstones - displayed in its entirety for the first time in over 100 years - was discovered in 1912, buried in a cellar on Cheapside in the City of London.
Through new research and state-of-the-art technology, the exhibition will showcase the wealth of insights the Hoard offers on Elizabethan and Jacobean London - as a centre of craftsmanship and conspicuous consumption, at the crossroads of the Old and New Worlds. It will also explore the mysteries that remain, lost among the cataclysmic events of the mid-17th century: who owned the Hoard, when and why was it hidden, and why was it never reclaimed?

Exploring Viennese portraiture during the Austro-Hungarian Empire (1867-1918), a powerful multi-national empire, this ground-breaking exhibition shows how the imperial and bourgeois traditions of 19th century art were both sustained and broken apart by the innovations of avant-garde artists.
The exhibition traces the distinctive flourishing of modern art in Vienna in the years before 1918 which saw the end of the First World War, the collapse of the empire, and the deaths of both Klimt and Schiele.

Georgians Revealed at The British Library
8 November 2013 - 11 March 2014
Tasteful and polite or riotous and pleasure-obsessed? Discover the Georgians as they really were, through the objects that tell the stories of their lives.
From beautifully furnished homes to raucous gambling dens, Georgians Revealed explores the revolution in everyday life that took place between 1714 and 1830. Cities and towns were transformed. Taking tea, reading magazines, gardening and shopping for leisure were commonplace and conspicuous consumption became the pastime of the emerging middle classes.
Popular culture as we know it began, and with it the unstoppable rise of fashion and celebrity. Art galleries, museums and charities were founded. In this time of incredible innovation, ideas were endlessly debated in new coffee houses and spread via the information highway that was mass print.

Lowry and the Painting of Modern Life at Tate Britain
26 June - 20 October 2013
This summer, Tate Britain presents a major exhibition of landscapes by the much loved British painter L S Lowry (1887-1976). This is the first show held by a public institution in London since the artist's death.
Bringing together around eighty works, including Tate's Coming Out of School 1927 and The Pond 1950, this show aims to re-assess Lowry's contribution as part of a wider art history and to argue for his achievement as Britain's pre-eminent painter of the industrial city.
Lowry's most frequent subjects were drawn from the streets he walked daily whilst working as a rent collector, subjects such as football matches, protest marches, evictions and fist-fights and workers going to and from the mill. But above all Lowry was a landscape painter and wished to show what the industrial revolution had made of the world. Without his pictures, Britain would arguably lack an account in paint of the experiences of the 20th-century working class.

Only in England: Photographs by Tony Ray-Jones and Martin Parr - Media Space - Science Museum
21 September 2013 - 16 March 2014
Fascinated by the eccentricities of English social customs, Tony Ray-Jones spent the latter half of the 1960s travelling across England, photographing what he saw as a disappearing way of life. Humorous yet melancholy, these works had a profound influence on photographer Martin Parr, who has now made a new selection of many previously unseen works from the National Media Museum's Ray-Jones archive. Shown alongside The Non-Conformists, Parr's rarely seen work from the 1970s, this selection forms a major new exhibition which demonstrates the close relationships between the work of these two important photographers.
Admission: Adult £8
Offer available: 21 September 2013 - 16 March 2014 during Museum opening hours 10am - 6pm daily (closed Dec 24-26).
Painting Now: Five Contemporary Artists at Tate Britain
Painting Now: Five Contemporary Artists focuses on the recent work of Tomma Abts, Gillian Carnegie, Simon Ling, Lucy McKenzie and Catherine Story, each of whom has developed their own distinctive approach to painting today. Opening at Tate Britain in November 2013, the exhibition presents different responses to the specific practice of painting. Subtle overlaps and affinities that can be drawn out of the varied work of these five artists offer a range of answers to the proposition of what painting might mean now.
The exhibition reveals some of the different relationships that exist between contemporary practice and more traditional approaches to painting, picture making and image construction and provides an opportunity for a wide-ranging and critical discussion about painting. The work in the exhibition shows that by adopting traditional manners, these artists break from the conventions of painting.

Dr Johnson’s House
Dr Johnson's House is one of the few surviving historic townhouses in the City of London (dated c.1700). Reached through a maze of courts and alleys just north of Fleet Street, it is a literary haven away from the crowds. Four stories of beautiful historic interiors and a fascinating collection of prints, portraits, furniture and books are on display. A warm welcome awaits visitors who can find out about Johnson's great literary endeavours, his eminent circle of friends, his quirky housemates and his love of tea, cats and London. Take time to peruse through his great Dictionary and discover the meanings of words such as jiggumbob, fopdoodle and bedpresser. Our visitor information, audio guide and free children's guide and costumes bring the house and Johnson to life. Johnson famously said 'When a man is tired of London, he is tired of life' and his house is a unique part of London's heritage that is well worth discovering.

Strawberry Hill House
Strawberry Hill is Britain's finest example of Georgian Gothic Revival architecture and interior decoration. It began life in 1698 as a modest house, later transformed into 'a little Gothic castle' by Horace Walpole, the son of England's first Prime Minister. Between 1747 and 1792 Walpole doubled its size, creating extraordinary rooms and adding towers and battlements.
Strawberry Hill was already a tourist site in its own day and has survived into ours, its rural surroundings gone, but its charm undiminished.
Following an £8.9 million restoration, the house is now open to the public as an extraordinary fairytale experience. A trip to the house and garden can be finished off by a delicious lunch in our café and a look around our unique gift shop.

The Monument to the Great Fire of London
The Monument stands at the junction of Monument Street and Fish Street Hill in the City of London. It was built between 1671 and 1677 to commemorate the Great Fire of London. The fire began in a baker's house in Pudding Lane on Sunday 2nd September 1666 and finally extinguished on Wednesday 5th September, after destroying the greater part of the City.
Although there was little loss of life, the fire brought all activity to a halt, having consumed or severely damaged thousands of houses, hundreds of streets, the City's gates, public buildings, churches and St. Paul's Cathedral. The only buildings to survive in part were those built of stone, like St. Paul's and the Guildhall. It is now open daily for visitors to climb the 311 steps and enjoy breathtaking views of London.
