National Portrait Gallery - Anarchy & Beauty by William Morris

William Morris was a visionary thinker with a concept of a future when the civilised world would have 'a new art, a glorious art, made by the people and for the people'.  In Britain Morris's influence and legacy has been incalculable. His own personal example inspired the radical politics of late Victorian Britain, the beginnings of the National Trust, and the Arts and Crafts movement. His idea of art in the celebration of community was still very much alive in the Festival of Britain of 1951. This exhibition features portraits of Morris, his contemporaries and his successors including Rossetti, Burne-Jones, Octavia Hill, Eric Gill, Bernard Leach and Terence Conran. V&A Constable: The Making of a Master

This major exhibition reassesses John Constable's influences, techniques and legacy to offer a new interpretation of Britain's best-loved artist. Discover how great works of art are created as Constable's most famous masterpieces are united with his revolutionary oil sketches: expressive evocations of land, sea and sky that allowed him to transfer the freshness of the outdoors into his exhibition paintings.

For the first time, Constable is presented alongside the old masters of classical landscape whose formal values he studiously assimilated. By combining the authority of their compositional ideas with a breathtakingly naturalistic vision that was entirely his own, Constable would ultimately transform the genre of landscape painting, and in the process shape the enduring popular image of the English countryside.

The Woman In Black at the Fortune Theatre

Since 1989, over 7 million people have lived to tell the tale of one of the most exciting, spooky, gripping and successful theatre events ever staged. Proud and solitary, Eel Marsh House surveys the windswept reaches of the salt marshes beyond Nine Lives Causeway. Arthur Kipps, a junior solicitor, is summoned to attend the funeral of Mrs Alice Drablow, the house's sole inhabitant, unaware of the tragic secrets which lie hidden behind the shuttered windows.

It is not until he glimpses a wasted young woman dressed all in black at the funeral, that a creeping sense of unease begins to take hold. This feeling is deepened by the reluctance of the locals to talk of the woman in black - and her terrible purpose. Years later, as an old man, he recounts his experiences to an actor in a desperate attempt to exorcise the ghosts of the past.

The play unfolds around the conversations of these two characters as they act out the solicitor's experiences on Eel Marsh all those years ago.

7 Hammersmith Terrace - Emery Walker's House

7 Hammersmith Terrace is a tall Georgian house on the River Thames. From 1903 to 1933 it was the home of Sir Emery Walker, printer, collector, and mentor to his neighbour William Morris. Contains perfectly preserved Arts & Crafts interior. He furnished the house with wallpaper, textiles and furniture from Morris & Co., as well as ceramics and rugs he collected on his travels throughout Europe. The manner of decoration is very much that found in the homes of his friends, the leaders of the Arts & Crafts movement, William Morris and Philip Webb. Thanks to the efforts of Walker's daughter, the furnishing and decoration of the house has survived almost exactly as it was in his lifetime. As such, it is the only interior of its kind in Britain.  Visitors can hear about the stories of Emery and his family and friends, how the house came to be preserved and the importance of the house to the Arts & Crafts movement. Banqueting House

This revolutionary structure was the first in England to be built in a Palladian style. It was designed by Inigo Jones for James I, and work finished in 1622. Intended for the splendour and exuberance of court masques, the Banqueting House is probably most famous for one real life drama: the execution of Charles I which took place here in 1649 to the 'dismal, universal groan' of the crowd. One of Charles's last sights as he walked through the Banqueting House to his death was the magnificent ceiling, painted by Peter Paul Rubens in 1630-4.

Hampton Court Palace

The flamboyant Henry VIII is most associated with this majestic palace, which he extended and developed after acquiring it from Cardinal Wolsey in the 1520s. He lavished money on fabulous tapestries and paintings, housed and fed a huge court and pursued a succession of wives, political power and domination over Rome.

The Tudor buildings that remain are among the most important in existence, but the elegance and romance of the palace owe much to the baroque buildings commissioned by William III and Mary II at the end of the 17th century. The palace is surrounded by formal gardens and acres of parkland with deer that are descendants of the herd once hunted by Henry VIII.

Kensington Palace

Built as a royal home for newly-weds William III and Mary II at the end of the 17th century, Kensington has been a stage for the drama of the nation's history, with private scenes of love, loss, heartbreak and happiness played out within these elegant walls. The little princess who grew up here endured a stifling and often lonely existence, but as an adult, Queen Victoria always spoke fondly of her birthplace. The famous Orangery was built in 1704 for Queen Anne, and George II's wife Queen Caroline, another keen gardener, added further improvements. Today the gardens reconnect the palace and the landscape once more.

Strawberry Hill House

Strawberry Hill is Britain's finest example of Georgian Gothic Revival architecture and interior decoration. It began life in 1698 as a modest house, later transformed into 'a little Gothic castle' by Horace Walpole, the son of England's first Prime Minister. Strawberry Hill was already a tourist site in its own day and has survived into ours, its rural surroundings gone, but its charm undiminished.

Tower of London

The ancient stones reverberate with dark secrets, priceless jewels glint in fortified vaults and pampered ravens strut the grounds. The Tower of London, founded by William the Conqueror in 1066-7, is one of the world's most famous fortresses, and one of Britain's most visited historic sites. Despite a grim reputation as a place of torture and death, there are so many more stories to be told about the Tower.

This powerful and enduring symbol of the Norman Conquest has been enjoyed as a royal palace, served as an armoury and for over 600 years even housed a menagerie! An intriguing cast of characters have played their part, including the dastardly jewel-thief Colonel Blood, tragic Lady Jane Grey and maverick zoo keeper Alfred Cops.

The Ghost Walking Tour of London and Boat Trip

The belief in manifestations of the spirits of the dead is widespread, dating back to animism or ancestor worship in pre-literate cultures. Certain religious practices-funeral rites, exorcisms, and some practices of spiritualism and ritual magic-are specifically designed to appease the spirits of the dead. Ghosts are generally described as solitary essences that haunt particular locations, objects, or people they were associated with in life, though stories of the phantom armies, ghost trains, phantom ships, and even ghost animals have also been recounted.

As one of the great urban centres of the modern world, the chaotic metropolis of London has one of the densest concentrations of paranormal phenomena, and this spooky walking tour brings the sometimes terrifying otherworldliness of this great city to life, or should we say death.....m...mwa...mwah....mwahhahahahahah!

Please note : A valid Travelcard/Oystercard is required to take part in the London Ghost Walk as it involves numerous train journeys across London, some of them haunted!
