Foundling Museum

The Foundling Museum explores the history of the Foundling Hospital, which was established in 1739 by the philanthropist Captain Thomas Coram as 'a hospital for the maintenance and education of exposed and deserted young children', and which continues today as the children's charity Coram. Instrumental in helping Coram realise his vision were the artist, William Hogarth, who encouraged all the leading artists of the day to donate work and the composer, George Frideric Handel, who gave annual benefit concerts of theMessiah. In doing so, they created London's first public art gallery and set the template for the way that the arts could support philanthropy. National Portrait Gallery - Sargent: Portraits of Artists & Friends

John Singer Sargent (1856-1925) was the greatest portrait painter of his generation. Acclaimed on both sides of the Atlantic, he was closely connected to many of the other leading artists, writers, actors and musicians of the time. His portraits of these friends and contemporaries, including Auguste Rodin, Claude Monet and Robert Louis Stevenson, were rarely commissioned and allowed him to create more intimate and experimental works than was possible in his formal portraiture. This major exhibition of over seventy portraits spans Sargent's time in London, Paris and Boston as well as his travels in the Italian and English countryside. Important loans from galleries and private collections in Europe and America make this an unmissible opportunity to discover the artist's most daring, personal and distinctive portraits. The Woman In Black at the Fortune Theatre

Since 1989, over 7 million people have lived to tell the tale of one of the most exciting, spooky, gripping and successful theatre events ever staged. Proud and solitary, Eel Marsh House surveys the windswept reaches of the salt marshes beyond Nine Lives Causeway. Arthur Kipps, a junior solicitor, is summoned to attend the funeral of Mrs Alice Drablow, the house's sole inhabitant, unaware of the tragic secrets which lie hidden behind the shuttered windows.

It is not until he glimpses a wasted young woman dressed all in black at the funeral, that a creeping sense of unease begins to take hold. This feeling is deepened by the reluctance of the locals to talk of the woman in black - and her terrible purpose. Years later, as an old man, he recounts his experiences to an actor in a desperate attempt to exorcise the ghosts of the past.

The play unfolds around the conversations of these two characters as they act out the solicitor's experiences on Eel Marsh all those years ago.

7 Hammersmith Terrace - Emery Walker's House

7 Hammersmith Terrace is a tall Georgian house on the River Thames. From 1903 to 1933 it was the home of Sir Emery Walker, printer, collector, and mentor to his neighbour William Morris. Contains perfectly preserved Arts & Crafts interior. He furnished the house with wallpaper, textiles and furniture from Morris & Co., as well as ceramics and rugs he collected on his travels throughout Europe. The manner of decoration is very much that found in the homes of his friends, the leaders of the Arts & Crafts movement, William Morris and Philip Webb. Thanks to the efforts of Walker's daughter, the furnishing and decoration of the house has survived almost exactly as it was in his lifetime. As such, it is the only interior of its kind in Britain.  Visitors can hear about the stories of Emery and his family and friends, how the house came to be preserved and the importance of the house to the Arts & Crafts movement. Hampton Court Palace

The flamboyant Henry VIII is most associated with this majestic palace, which he extended and developed after acquiring it from Cardinal Wolsey in the 1520s. He lavished money on fabulous tapestries and paintings, housed and fed a huge court and pursued a succession of wives, political power and domination over Rome.

The Tudor buildings that remain are among the most important in existence, but the elegance and romance of the palace owe much to the baroque buildings commissioned by William III and Mary II at the end of the 17th century. The palace is surrounded by formal gardens and acres of parkland with deer that are descendants of the herd once hunted by Henry VIII.

Kensington Palace

Built as a royal home for newly-weds William III and Mary II at the end of the 17th century, Kensington has been a stage for the drama of the nation's history, with private scenes of love, loss, heartbreak and happiness played out within these elegant walls. The little princess who grew up here endured a stifling and often lonely existence, but as an adult, Queen Victoria always spoke fondly of her birthplace. The famous Orangery was built in 1704 for Queen Anne, and George II's wife Queen Caroline, another keen gardener, added further improvements. Today the gardens reconnect the palace and the landscape once more.

Strawberry Hill

Situated just a 40 minute train ride from Waterloo, Strawberry Hill is Britain's finest example of Gothic Revival architecture and interior decoration. It began life in 1698 as a modest house and was later transformed by Horace Walpole, the son of England's first Prime Minister into a "little gothic castle".

Between 1747 and 1792 Walpole doubled its size, creating extraordinary rooms and adding towers and battlements in fulfilment of his dream. Following an £8.9 million restoration with the support of the Heritage Lottery Fund, the show rooms on the ground and first floors have been fully restored to take the house back to the 1790s when Walpole had completed his creation. Strawberry Hill was a tourist site in its own day and like their 18th century predecessors, modern visitors can enjoy this Georgian gem's charm which remains undiminished.

The Ghost Walking Tour of London

The belief in manifestations of the spirits of the dead is widespread, dating back to animism or ancestor worship in pre-literate cultures. Certain religious practices-funeral rites, exorcisms, and some practices of spiritualism and ritual magic-are specifically designed to appease the spirits of the dead. Ghosts are generally described as solitary essences that haunt particular locations, objects, or people they were associated with in life, though stories of the phantom armies, ghost trains, phantom ships, and even ghost animals have also been recounted.

As one of the great urban centres of the modern world, the chaotic metropolis of London has one of the densest concentrations of paranormal phenomena, and this spooky walking tour brings the sometimes terrifying otherworldliness of this great city to life, or should we say death.....m...mwa...mwah....mwahhahahahahah!

A valid Travelcard/Oystercard is required to take part in the London Ghost Walk as it involves numerous train journeys across London, some of them haunted!
