Foundling Museum

The Foundling Museum explores the history of the Foundling Hospital, which was established in 1739 by the philanthropist Captain Thomas Coram as 'a hospital for the maintenance and education of exposed and deserted young children', and which continues today as the children's charity Coram. Instrumental in helping Coram realise his vision were the artist, William Hogarth, who encouraged all the leading artists of the day to donate work and the composer, George Frideric Handel, who gave annual benefit concerts of theMessiah. In doing so, they created London's first public art gallery and set the template for the way that the arts could support philanthropy. Tate Modern: Agnes Martin

Agnes Martin is perhaps most recognised for her evocative paintings marked out in subtle pencil grids and pale colour washes. Although restrained, her style underpinned a deep conviction in the emotive and expressive power of art. For Martin, it was spiritual inspiration and not intellect that created great work. 'When I think of art' wrote Martin 'I think of beauty'. Martin lived and worked in New York, becoming a key figure in the male-dominated fields of 1950s and 1960s abstraction. Then in 1967, just as her art was gaining acclaim, Martin abandoned the city and went in search of solitude and silence. For almost two years she travelled across the US and Canada before finally settling in New Mexico as Georgia O'Keeffe, Mark Rothko, DH Lawrence and Edward Hopper had done before her. It was here that Martin returned to painting and created some of her most iconic minimalist works. This is the first retrospective of Martin's work since her death in 2004. Covering the full breadth of her practice this extensive exhibition will reveal Martin's early experiments with different media and geometric shapes tracing her developments into the mesmerising grid canvases that would become her hallmark. The Woman In Black at the Fortune Theatre

Since 1989, over 7 million people have lived to tell the tale of one of the most exciting, spooky, gripping and successful theatre events ever staged. Proud and solitary, Eel Marsh House surveys the windswept reaches of the salt marshes beyond Nine Lives Causeway. Arthur Kipps, a junior solicitor, is summoned to attend the funeral of Mrs Alice Drablow, the house's sole inhabitant, unaware of the tragic secrets which lie hidden behind the shuttered windows.

It is not until he glimpses a wasted young woman dressed all in black at the funeral, that a creeping sense of unease begins to take hold. This feeling is deepened by the reluctance of the locals to talk of the woman in black - and her terrible purpose. Years later, as an old man, he recounts his experiences to an actor in a desperate attempt to exorcise the ghosts of the past.

The play unfolds around the conversations of these two characters as they act out the solicitor's experiences on Eel Marsh all those years ago.

Banqueting House

This revolutionary structure was the first in England to be built in a Palladian style. It was designed by Inigo Jones for James I, and work finished in 1622. 7 Hammersmith Terrace - Emery Walker's House

7 Hammersmith Terrace is a tall Georgian house on the River Thames. From 1903 to 1933 it was the home of Sir Emery Walker, printer, collector, and mentor to his neighbour William Morris. Contains perfectly preserved Arts & Crafts interior. He furnished the house with wallpaper, textiles and furniture from Morris & Co., as well as ceramics and rugs he collected on his travels throughout Europe. The manner of decoration is very much that found in the homes of his friends, the leaders of the Arts & Crafts movement, William Morris and Philip Webb. Thanks to the efforts of Walker's daughter, the furnishing and decoration of the house has survived almost exactly as it was in his lifetime. As such, it is the only interior of its kind in Britain. Visitors can hear about the stories of Emery and his family and friends, how the house came to be preserved and the importance of the house to the Arts & Crafts movement. Admission price: £10 Opening times: Please see website for further details. Three tours every Saturday at 11.00, 12.30 and 14.00

Hampton Court Palace

The flamboyant Henry VIII is most associated with this majestic palace, which he extended and developed after acquiring it from Cardinal Wolsey in the 1520s. He lavished money on fabulous tapestries and paintings, housed and fed a huge court and pursued a succession of wives, political power and domination over Rome.

The Tudor buildings that remain are among the most important in existence, but the elegance and romance of the palace owe much to the baroque buildings commissioned by William III and Mary II at the end of the 17th century. The palace is surrounded by formal gardens and acres of parkland with deer that are descendants of the herd once hunted by Henry VIII.
