Did you Know?
Capital of Cumbria in the 9th and 10th centuries, Penrith welcomed Mary Queen of Scots who stayed in Penrith on her journey south. Anti-royalist Cromwell also occupied the town. The Wordsworth siblings, William and Dorothy, went to Dame Anne Birkett School in Penrith, as did Mary Hutchinson (the future Mrs. W. Wordsworth)
Top Tip
Take a walk up Beacon Hill, high above the eastern edge of the town, with its 1719 stone beacon, marking the spot where fires have been lit in times of emergency since Henry VIII's day. To the north, enjoy views of the Eden Valley, to the south-west, survey the Lakes
