Woman travelling in First Class on Virgin Trains

Welcome to the Virgin Trains blog, which we are super pleased to announce is launching alongside our brand new, shiny website.

We love hearing from you and your feedback about us and how we can create the best possible experience for you – whether it’s on our trains or on our website. In addition to your valuable feedback, we undertook quite a bit of research ourselves, to see what else we could do to make the new site awesome.

What you see now, in our new website’s design and features, is what you told us you wanted to see and what you wanted improved. A lot of work has gone into it – and we are pretty chuffed with it so far – and, since everyone loves a few stats, here are some rough numbers behind the new and improved virgintrains.com:

  • 26,100 cups of coffee drank – and probably as many teas.
  • 3,480 working hours – we all need sleep sometime.
  • 430 meetings – that’s a lot of chatter and meeting notes.
  • 290 days – the first day seems very long ago now, phew.
  • 65 people – developers, designers, copywriters, project managers… the list goes on.
  • 19 companies – quite an entourage.
  • 1 birth – one beautiful baby girl called Francesca.

And there you have it. Anyway, welcome to our new digital home and here are some of the key improvements and new features for you:

Seat Picker

You told us you wanted the ability to change your seats while booking, just like when booking a flight or even going to the cinema. Now you can view a selected seat and change your booking as you wish. High five!

Journey Planner Powered By Google

As much as you love hanging out in train stations, we know that’s not your final destination. So, we’ve teamed up with Google to produce a one-off Virgin Trains Journey Planner, which allows you to map your whole journey from door to door (or postcode to postcode), rather than station to station. For example, say you are leaving Marble Arch in London and you want to head up to the Northern Quarter in Manchester, you will be given all the steps you need to get you there – just check it out.  Think of any combo and give it a try.

More Information about Stations

Good news for those who do love hanging around in train stations...we now have a load more information for you, from the location of the ticket offices, to which restaurants and shops are there and more. We also now have Google Street View, so you can explore 360° tours of our managed stations and even take a sneak peek inside our trains.

Still no booking fees

Ok, so this isn’t a new feature but we wanted to remind you that, unlike some other train booking sites, when you buy tickets via our website (or our mobile app) there are no booking fees and no card charges. Plus, you can still book tickets on our site for any train no matter what operator (not just our routes), so you really can save when you book with us. Happy days.

We look great on any device

Our new site is responsive, which means it will respond to your device's width and adjust the content automatically. Ultimately, you can view us on mobile, tablet, laptop or desktop and we should look pretty damn good.

But don’t listen to us - take a look around for yourself!

And what about the blog? Well, you can expect a variety of news, interesting stories, travel suggestions to inspire plus details on our services, competitions and promotions. We’re also keen to feature stories from you – you share so many great stories with us, we thought it’s time to share them with everyone else!

Until next time.

(Or, if you can’t wait until our next post, you can pop over and say hello to the gang on Twitter or Facebook.)
