Travelling with children on trains is a handful as it is, and the last thing you want to be worrying about is making sure you have the right ticket for your little one.

Here’s what you need to know about train fares for children to make sure you have a hassle-free journey with the kids in tow.

Child rail fares

Are child rail fares discounted?

Kids aged between 5 and 15 are entitled to discounted child rail fares. Lucky them! You can book child train tickets online, via our mobile app or at stations.

Saving on child fares

When can kids go free on trains?

Children under the age of 5 can travel free of charge, so you don’t need to book a ticket for them

Keep in mind, though, that this means they don't have a reserved seat and will need to sit on your knee if the train is busy.

If you want your child to have his or her own seat, you’re welcome to book a ticket at the standard child train ticket price.

Tips for travelling with children on trains

Train travel should be fun for kids and grown-ups alike. Here's our top tips to make sure your next train trip with the kids is a happy one:

Get your entertainment sorted – Pack their favourite books, toys and games, and don’t forget that our trains come with free onboard entertainment including kids’ movies, TV shows and boredom-busting games.

Book window seats – Little ones love great views, and we’ve got loads of them.

Be prepared for ‘emergencies’ – Choose a seat near the toilets and ask our staff to direct you to the baby-changing facilities if needed.
